Governance Goals for SY 2017-18

Goal: The Board consistently monitors District performance to ensure focus on student achievement.
CSIP Alignment: Academic Achievement for All Students
Objective: Decrease the number of questions designated as a weakness or “Don’t Know” by more than one Board Director in the section “Board Monitors District Performance” from 62.5% to 25% when the Board Self Evaluation is administered again in February/March 2018.
Action Steps:- All Board action items requiring data review are discussed first in work session.
- Reviews of APR data and benchmarks are scheduled quarterly.
- The Board will hold administration accountable for creating an updated comprehensive plan.
- The Board will hold administration accountable for assessing the culture and climate yearly.
- The quarterly APR reviews, presentation of Comprehensive Plan, and Culture and Climate study will be set on the agenda through the perpetual calendar.
Goal: The Board consistently takes full responsibility for Board activity and behavior. Board deliberations and actions are limited to Board work, not staff work.
Objective: Decrease the number of questions designated as a weakness or “Don’t Know” by more than one Board Director in the section “Board Takes Responsibility for Itself” from 31% to 10% when the Board Self Evaluation is administered again in February/March 2018.
Action Steps:- Have an accurate copy of Board policies available at all meetings.
- Individuals take personal responsibility to be familiar with policy.
- The Policy committee reconvenes and set yearly goals.
- Periodically schedule team building activities to address trust issues.
- Board Directors take personal responsibility with each other to dialogue about any issues they have with each other.
Goal: The Board delegates authority to the superintendent to manage the District and provide leadership for the staff.
Objective: Increase the number of questions designated as a strength (7 to 6 Board Directors answer in the affirmative) from 25% of the questions to 60% of the questions when the Board Self Evaluation is administered again in February/March 2018.
Action Steps:- Professional Development on governance versus management.
- Do a book study on quality school board governance.
- Find or create quick “cheat sheets” on “Chain of Command” and “Board Roles”.
- Schedule work session on hiring and evaluation process.
- Have a yearly report summarizing employee evaluations.
